Ink Refill Instructions for HP 301, 301 XL color
Preparation
To refill the HP 301, 301 XL cartridge, you need the following supplies:
- an absorbent underlay (e.g. paper towel)
- a cutter knife or putty knife
- 3 syringes with needles
- ink for HP 301 3ml each, for HP 301 XL 4 ml each

Prepare your workplace in a way that no permanent staining with ink is possible. We recommend spreading paper towels on an ink repellent underlay (e. g. place mats). Remove the cartridge from your printer and place it on the table in front of you. Carefully remove the label on the upper side of the cartridge with the cutter knife (picture 1). The label will be reused after refilling.
Now the filler openings are visible. When refilling HP301 and HP 301 XL cartridges, you have to distinguish between cartridges that you bought separately and starter cartridges (bought together with the printer). The arrangement of the colour chambers of starter cartridges differs from that of other cartridges. Picture 2 shows the arrangement of the colour chambers in a separately bought cartridge; picture 3 shows the arrangement in the starter cartridge.
If you are not sure were to fill in the ink you can take a syringe with needle and insert it into the respective chamber. When you pull it back out you can see which colour is inside.

Refilling HP 301, 301 XL cartridges:

Plug the needle onto the syringe. Draw the recommended amount of ink into the syringe.
Insert the filled syringe into the cartridge (picture 3). You will notice a slight resistance due to the sponge inside the chamber. Insert the needle no further than 3cm. Otherwise, you will stab into the filter screen and the ink will leak from the cartridge without hindrance.
Now carefully fill in the ink. If ink leaks from the filler opening, draw a little back into the syringe. One colour chamber is now filled. Repeat the procedure with the two other chambers. Once you have filled all three chambers, your cartridge is ready to print again.
Characteristics of HP 301, 301 XL cartridges:
After reinserting the refilled cartridge, your printer might show an error message saying that the cartridge is empty. You can ignore the message and your printer will continue printing, but the filling level display will no longer work because your printer knows this HP 301, HP 301 XL colour cartridge from the serial number and knows it to be empty.
If it is not possible to ignore the message and continue printing, you can only replace the cartridge with another refilled one or a completely new HP 301, 301 XL colour cartridge, because there is currently no way to reset the cartridge as with older HP cartridges.
Note: Normally, a printer saves the serial number of the last 3 cartridges. If you have several cartridges of the same type, you can try printing with another one or you insert each of them one after another into your printer until the refilled one is be the fourth one and can be inserted and used. This way, your printer overwrites the three serial numbers saved.
However, we cannot guarantee that these methods work.
