Epson 503 instructions for alternative, refillable printer cartridges with resettable ink chips
The refill instructions show you how to use the alternative, refillable ink cartridges, which can be used in the Epson printer instead of the original Epson 503, Epson 503XL printer cartridges. Find out everything you need to know about the design of the fill-in cartridges - where are the ink filling opening, ventilation opening and ink outlet opening? Why is the transparent cartridge body an advantage? And how does the resettable ink chip work? What is the chip resetter needed for and how do you use it to reset the ink level? We'll show you how easy it is to fill in the right printer ink and explain how the reset chip works when detecting the ink level in combination with the right chip resetter.
The refillable cartridge set as an alternative to the Epson 503 ink cartridges consists of four individual ink tanks - one cartridge each for the ink colors black, cyan, magenta and yellow. In contrast to the original Epson 503 cartridges, which can only be used once, this cartridge solution is designed for long-term use - each cartridge can be refilled with the appropriate printer ink, and the ink chip on the cartridges can be reset using a chip resetter.
The bodies of the refillable cartridges are made of a transparent plastic material. Thanks to this material, you can clearly see whether there is enough ink in the fill-in cartridge or whether ink needs to be refilled. Each alternative ink tank has an ink chip that is compatible with Epson 503 ink cartridges. This chip shows how much ink is mathematically present in the cartridge in the ink level detection on the printer display and the chip identifies the cartridge as suitable to the printer.
How to fill the refillable ink cartridges alternative to Epson 503 with the right amount of printer ink?
The ink is taken directly from the bottle with the printer ink compatible with Epson cartridge model 503. We have found that it is helpful to have some air in the syringe barrel at the beginning of the draw up. This makes it easier for you to read off the scale of the refill syringe how much ink is in the syringe.
Each of the refillable ink cartridges suitable for Epson 503 is filled with 7 to 10 ml of the appropriate printer ink.
Open the filler opening, remove the plug for this purpose - keep it safe, it will be needed again for closing afterwards. Carefully insert the cannula attached to the refill syringe through the filling opening into the Fill In cartridge and carefully pour the refill ink into the ink tank. After filling the ink, close the filling opening again with the plug.
Installing the Fill In cartridge set in the Epson printer with Epson 503 ink cartridges
When installing the Fill In cartridges, remove the plug from the air vent. During printing, the vents on the Fill In cartridges must be open. Insert each of the fillable cartridges into the correct position in the print head carriage of the Epson printer. Make sure that the cartridges snap firmly into place - this ensures that the ink outlet and its valve open correctly and that there is contact between the ink chip on the cartridge and the contact pins in the printhead carriage.
If the complete set of Fill In cartridges is in the Epson printer, the cover above the printhead carriage can be closed. The printer display will indicate that non-genuine consumables are installed in the printer instead of genuine Epson 503 ink cartridges. This is correct. The use of the alternative, refillable cartridges must be confirmed. To do this, work through the steps listed on the display one after the other. Once the printer has finished processing, the display will show "Replacement complete", which refers to the ink cartridges. Each of the refillable, reusable printer cartridges will be recognized and displayed with a full ink level bar.
How does the ink level display work with the resettable chip for Epson 503 ink cartridges?
As printing and ink consumption continue, more and more ink is removed from the initially full level bar of the fill-in cartridges until the corresponding cartridge is marked with an exclamation mark on the bar - this mark indicates that the ink level in this cartridge is low, the ink in this cartridge will soon be used up. The message "cartridge empty / ink used up" is different for the fill-in cartridges than for the original Epson 603 printer cartridges due to the alternative auto-reset chip. The empty cartridge is shown on the printer display with an empty level bar plus an exclamation mark and receives the message "ink cartridge not recognized". Remove the fill-in cartridge that is shown as empty / reported as not recognized from the printer, fill it with the appropriate refill ink and reset the ink chip with the corresponding chip resetter. Put the refilled cartridge back into the printer and confirm the use of this non-original cartridge material on the display again. After processing is complete, the Epson printer will recognize this cartridge with a full ink level thanks to the reset chip and will also display a completely filled color bar.
