Canon PGI-2500 cartridges are equipped with a chip. When the cartridge is empty, the chip signals to the printer that the cartridge is empty.

The original chips on the cartridges are replaced with these auto reset chips, which then monitor the filling level of the cartridges. The chips are automatically reset when the cartridges are "empty" and removed from the printer, and the filling level is reset to "full" when they are reinserted.
